Musician Monte Hooker has been a fixture on the Outer Banks for 33 years. When he’s not troubleshooting pump and control panel issues for Environtech — from Corolla to Hatteras, Moyock to Englehard to Swan Quarter — he’s wowing crowds at local hot spots, including Hurricane Mo’s, Arts Place and Aqua. “I play mostly classic rock, Beatles, Eagles, Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, Tom Petty, Allman Brothers and others along that line, and a few from Jim Croce, Gordan Lightfoot, James Taylor, Cat Stevens and also some newer artists, Jack Johnson, Passenger and Avette Brothers — and a few original tunes, as well,” Hooker says. “I mainly play guitar, but I can play bass, drums, percussion and some keyboards.” Playing in area “is just like playing at home to me,” he says. In addition to performing solo, Hooker also shares the stage as duo with percussionist Chuck Mizelle, and as a trio called the Mo-Rons, which also includes Joe Alleva behind the drum kit and Scott Nickins on bass. He says the talent on the beach is impressive, and he welcomes the chance to work with as many Outer Banks musicians as possible, but if he could jam with anyone — anyone at all, living or dead — he’d have to go with two Brits: Jimmy Page, guitarist extraordinaire and founder of the rock band Led Zeppelin, and the late-George Harrison of The Beatles. “I love their music."
